(440) SUPERMAN ON NAURU

The Japanese seized the Island of Nauru because it had a large deposit of phosphorous that they needed in the manufacture of gunpowder. The Air Force was ordered to attack Nauru in February 1943, and they took off to accomplish the mission. Ray Lambert was the Tail-gunner on the airplane known as Superman. The plane withstood a vicious attack by the Japanese, and when it landed back at home base, had 594 holes in it. One crewman was killed, several were severely wounded, including Ray Lambert, who spent five months in the hospital, but lived.

The amazing part of the story is that the B-24 was a lousy airplane and it was a miracle that anyone survived the attack. Lambert did, and he eventually returned to duty, amassing an astounding record, successfully completing at least 95 missions.

Respectfully submitted,
